Scillonian III, the lifeline passenger link between the mainland and Isles of Scilly, has undergone her annual maintenance programme and left Penzance Dry Dock ready to return to full service on March 27.
Scillonian III was in the Dry Dock for ten days where she underwent her annual survey for Passenger Vessel Certification, a certification which is issued by the UK maritime and Coastguard Agency.
The survey included a full inspection of all underwater parts of the vessel. The ship has also been surveyed by Lloyd’s register of shipping classification society.
As well as survey work, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company painted the underwater hull of Scillonian III with a special anti fouling paint. They also carried out minor repairs, painted the ship’s sides and cleaned the propellers and bow thrusters. Machinery on board has also had an overhaul, ready for the new season.
Jeff Marston, chief executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said: “Every year Scillonian III undergoes her annual programme of works before returning to service for the summer season. The team in the Dry Dock worked extremely hard to ensure that she was able to leave the Dry Dock on time to allow for final works onboard ahead of her first voyage of the season.
“We are looking forward to a busy season ahead and hope that everyone enjoys sailing with us again this year.”
Scillonian III celebrated 30 years in service during 2007, the ship was commissioned and built for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company by Appledore Shipbuilders Ltd in Devon with work starting in 1973. She sailed her maiden voyage on 19th May 1977 and since then has become a signature sight of the Islands and a preferred method of travel for many visitors and islanders alike.
Scillonian III sails from Penzance to St Mary’s from 27th March until 30th October 2010.
