The UK’s digital industry is growing 32 percent faster than the rest of the economy, according to an industry leading report. As the industry grows the need for skills increases and to help meet that demand the Cornwall College Group is launching a new top up degree; BA (Hons) Games Design for Industry.
The top up, which is validated by Falmouth University, has been developed to meet the requirements of one of the fastest growing, dynamic and entrepreneurial sectors in the creative industries. The course focusses on all aspects of games design and will be based in the creative studio at Cornwall College Camborne.
Programme Leader for Games Design, Stephen Howard, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we will be launching the new top up degree this September; it’s something businesses have been talking to us about for a number of years. The digital economy in Cornwall is growing and our students are in demand and this new course will equip them with a range of technical and business skills, which will help them to succeed.”
The digital economy of Cornwall has seen unprecedented growth and that makes the digital economy a key focus of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) because of its continuing potential to create high quality, well paid jobs.
Howard continued: “We have been successfully providing games design courses for over 10 years, starting at BTEC level, through HNC and HND options and these have been great options for launching student careers. Our emphasis is about making learning work and helping our students to gain as much industry experience as possible.”
The course will focus on artistic and technical skills enabling students to build their own games, but there will also be modules on business development and entrepreneurism. The combination of these skills will enable graduates to potentially launch their own business, or to help bring fresh ideas to established companies.
Digital Project Manager at Carters Packaging, Kaleb Harding, is a former student: “I think it is great news that Cornwall College Camborne now offers a BA (Hons) in Game Design, as it could prove a real boost for the county. With the fantastic resources and staff they have backing the course I feel potential students will acquire a solid foundation in the skills and knowledge required to gain a foot hold within one of the most creative and immersive industries around today.
