Bestselling authors including Patrick Gale, Hollie McNish and Wyl Menmuir are pledging their support to a new bookshop opening on Newquay’s high street.

Clemo Books is launching a Crowdfunder campaign on national Bookshop Day (Oct 14), raising money to support the start-up business ahead of the bookshop opening in Newquay later this year.

Clemo Books has been operating as a pop-up bookshop since October 2021 and its next chapter will see the business open in the Cornish seaside town of Newquay.

A Crowdfunder campaign aims to raise finances to support the set-up stage of Clemo Books and rewards include the chance to win a year’s book club membership, the opportunity to become a bookseller for a day and evening hire of the bookshop.

Clemo Books founder and bookseller, Jaimie Poyner, set about creating a bookshop in Newquay as she missed the cultural opportunities and community that an independent bookshop can bring to a town.

She said: “Clemo Books’ pop-up stage has been such an adventure and I’m excited to bring the idea to life with a permanent bookshop on our high street. Lots of Newquay residents have said how they’d love to see a bookshop on the high street again and I’m excited to launch this Crowdfunder to help make that happen.

“I hope people like the rewards on offer and get behind the campaign – I really believe Clemo Books will serve our community for many years to come, we deserve a bookshop in Newquay.”

Clemo Books will be part of the national trend which is seeing the return of independent bookshops to the high street. UK bookshop numbers hit a ten-year high in 2022 according to the Bookseller Association, which organises the annual national Bookshop Day celebration.
