Cornish company Chris Biggs Engineering is now under new ownership, following the founder’s decision to step back from day-to-day duties after more than 50 years in business.

The Fowey-based steel fabrication company was recently acquired by local business consultant Clay Cowie, who plans to expand the business to meet the growing demands of residential, commercial, agricultural and marine construction projects in the south west.

Established by Chris Biggs in 1969, the company has been involved in thousands of steel manufacturing projects in and outside of Cornwall over the years, including refurbishment works at Truro Cathedral.

It has also been central to the transformation of Fowey’s waterfront over the past few decades, having designed, manufactured and installed many of the stunning wrap-around balconies and spiral staircases adorning houses along the river.

Biggs has now semi-retired, although he will still be involved in big projects and key decisions concerning the business.

New owner Clay Cowie said: “It’s an honour to be working with this long-established and well-respected local business. It’s come a long way since its humble beginnings over 50 years ago. I plan to build on this reputation and grow the company so it thrives for decades to come.”
