Despite a record number of competitors, Padstow’s Chough Bakery had much to celebrate at the 2009 Western Bakery Championships with 16 prizes across 36 classes.
Its successes included first prize in the baguette and West Country cream tea scones classes and the family-owned company was highest-placed Cornish business in the Cornish pasty classes, with second and third positions.
Twenty-eight-year-old Danny O’Flynn caught the eye in the trainee classes with five seconds and a very highly commended.
Chough’s impressive performance at the prestigious championships, held at Cullompton, Devon, followed hard on the heels of September’s Taste of the West 2009 Product Awards, when the Padstow firm won gold, silver and bronze awards.
Partner Elaine Ead commented: “It all adds up to a terrific show from a small Cornish family bakery competing head-to-head with the big boys!”
