A scrap metal dealer in St Austell has added to its green credentials by installing 36 solar panels at its site.

Henry Orchard and Sons, which is a near neighbour of the Eden Project, has added the 9kwh photovoltaic panels to the roof on one of its buildings.

And in the first 12 hours after the panels were installed, it generated 60kWhs of electricity.

Henry Orchard, managing director of the company, said: “We’re really pleased to have installed the panels.

“It’s part of our ongoing commitment which is encapsulated in our ISO14001 accreditation to continually improve our sustainability.

“It will help us generate our own electricity and we can use this to help power our new, more efficient machinery.”

Along with the solar panels, the company has also invested in a fuel efficient materials handling machine, which will save 20% in fuel usage and costs.
