A Cornish brewer has made a cheeky promise to customers that all its beer really is brewed just outside Launceston, after Doom Bar found itself at the centre of an origin storm yesterday.

Rock-based Sharp’s, which since 2011 has been owned by global giant Molson Coors, made national headlines when it emerged that bottles of its flagship Doom Bar are actually brewed in Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire despite “Rock, Cornwall” featuring on the front of labels. The cask version is still made in Cornwall.

Joe Thomson, head brewer at Penpont Brewery and Firebrand Brewing Co, said: “Cornwall has an amazing reputation for fantastic food and drink. When it’s discovered that someone is trading on that reputation while actually making their product elsewhere it leaves people feeling conned and damages trust in that brand.

“All of Penpont and Firebrand’s casks, kegs and bottles are brewed at Inner Trenarrett, Altarnun on the same farm where our rare breed pigs are raised for the pulled pork at Firebrand Bar & Restaurant.

“We know our customers love Cornish produce and really care about where it comes from.”
