Cornish gingerbread biscuits are gathering an increasingly loyal following across the world, everywhere from the US to the Far East.

There is said to be a growing appetite for prominent British brands in many export markets, with the Furniss brand from Proper Cornish no exception.

Furniss export manager, David Roberts, explained: “The potential market out there is huge and the Olympics brought even more attention to British products.

“For example, Cost Plus in the USA had large in-store GB displays across their 259 store chain. Our first order from them for 4,000 tins sold very quickly and was soon followed by a second order for another 12,000 tins.

“12,000 was also the number of packs sent to Japan in September, a mixed order of fairings, shortbread and the new Original Savoury range loaded into a container and bound for the prestigious Hankyu Department Store chain.”

With markets already established in Australia and New Zealand and regular orders coming from Germany, Poland and Spain, Roberts thinks the future for Furniss exports looks very good.

“Sixteen countries already,” he pointed out, “and we’ve just received our first order from Ghana for a large consignment to be delivered in time for the beginning of Christmas shopping.”
