As the world’s top rowers take to the water at Eton Dorney to compete in the Olympic rowing, staircases from Helston’s Spiral UK will take centre stage.
The company designed, manufactured and installed all the staircases in the main Eton Boat Club headquarters, now the focus for the world’s media as Team GB take on athletes from all over the globe in their quest for gold.
Spiral UK’s managing director Eric Nicholls explained: “Eton College, who own the facilities at Dorney, are long standing clients of ours since the mid 1990’s, and we have worked on over a dozen of their buildings during this time.
“When Dorney Lake, as it was initially known, was being dug, they wanted to create a building that was an architectural eature and would provide top quality facilities for the college and the larger community. The building has four glazed towers, each containing a concrete spiral staircase with polished stainless steel and glass balustrade, as well as other internal stairs.
“From our experience of working at Leander Club at Henley, and providing all the stairs for Oxford University’s Boat Club at Wallingford, we worked with the architects, Stribling & Partners, to ensure the stairs were of the highest quality and design.
“The college was delighted with the finished product, so much so that when they constructed an additional building on the finishing line, this also included a glazed tower and spiral stair to match! This has already been very visible on TV coverage.”
