A virtual alternative for visitors

While people may not be able to visit Cornwall’s outstanding landmarks and attractions in person at the moment, there is the next best thing.

From the depths of a tin mine to the heights of a zip wire – a new compilation of virtual tours is freely available for people to experience while self-isolating at home.

The team at Sound View Media is working with visitor attractions and destinations from across the region to bring some of our favourite places into our homes with the use of Virtual Reality technology.

Sound View has built up an impressive library of 360-degree VR and as the country locked-down this week the team has put its resources into creating “Stay at Home VR Experiences”.

They have been busy creating an online channel for everyone to access 360 VR experiences, from chilled coastal locations to high adrenaline action.

Gareth Allen, Sound View Media’s managing director, said: “I’ve just been to one of my favourite places in virtual reality, Porthcurno, it gave me a sense of wellbeing and set me up for the day ahead.

“We keep finding new ways to use 360 VR video and this felt like an ideal fit. We work with tourism businesses throughout the south west and are doing what we can to support the industry through difficult times.”

You can view the virtual tours with a VR headset or if you do not have one you can explore the 360-video online and on your mobile. Some of the experiences already on the channel include Geevor Tin Mine, Trebah Garden and the Eden Project.

Malcolm Bell, chief executive of Visit Cornwall, adds this message for the thousands of people who have had to put their holiday plans on ice:

“We miss you, we love you, we can’t wait for you to come back. But we don’t want you to miss out, so here is a little bit of Cornwall, virtually, from the safety of your homes. We’ll be here to welcome you when you are able to come.”

The team at Sound View Media will be adding more content in the coming weeks and are inviting others to contribute their VR films.
