A hotel in Newquay that aims to attract responsible groups to the resort has had its best ever year despite two competitors going into administration.

Sunnyside Lee Betts (L) and Lee Gamble
L-R: Lee Betts (Marketing Manager), Lee Gamble (Managing Director).

Hotel Sunnyside offers school trips and short breaks for young couples as well as activity-led stag and hen parties at weekends. Over the last year bookings at the 150-bed hotel have increased significantly and there has been a record increase in turnover partly due to support from Lee Betts, who was employed under Unlocking Potential.

UP receives ESF (European Social Fund) Convergence investment to help graduates boost their career prospects with SMEs in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.  A Combined Universities in Cornwall scheme managed by Cornwall College, it places graduates with businesses in Cornwall to undertake specific projects and offers support including mentoring.

MD Lee Gamble said: “Turnover is up 12% and Hotel Sunnyside has had its best ever financial year.  Lee has been a fantastic addition to the team, bringing fresh ideas and a greater understanding of modern marketing practices.  Together with a fantastic work ethic and an intelligent and considered grip on revenue management, Lee has excelled in his short time with us.

“With respect to the support from Unlocking Potential, we have been delighted.  From our initial contact, to the recruitment stage, through to Lee’s recent Exit Interview, the support from Andy Peters and his team has been thoroughly professional, friendly, and efficient at all times.  UP has been a genuine help to our business and we are very grateful indeed.  I cannot recommend UP highly enough.”
