The Fal River Mussel Card initiative continues to be a great success, with 2011 sales up a massive 400%.

Launched in 2010, the transport and attraction pass, which runs from Easter to October, allows visitors to enjoy unlimited ‘hop on, hop off’ travel on buses, trains and ferries during their stay.

Designed to reduce visitors’ needs to use a car they also have the option to upgrade to a ‘PLUS’ version, which includes unlimited entry to all the attractions, castles and museums around the river.

Fal River Cornwall marketing manager, Toby Budd, said: “Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Fal River is fast establishing itself as Cornwall’s most popular visitor destination.

“With Fal River Links and the Mussel Card at the core of this offering, this new and innovative transport and attraction pass is set to become one of the county’s must do visitor activities.”

Fal River Cornwall has also reported strong growth in the number of three and six day cards it sells, which it believes indicates people are booking a short break or holiday on the river because of the Mussel Card.

Tamsin Loveless, head of communications at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, added: “During the last season we have seen an increase in the number of visitors at the museum using the Mussel Card.

“2011 has been a tough year for tourism so a scheme like this that encourages visitors to get the most out of their holiday, as well as support the local economy, is very important.”
