Local MP Stephen Gilbert has warned against Cornwall Council selling off Newquay Airport before it is on a sound and sustainable footing.

This follows recent comments made by Cllr Mark Kaczmarek to Business Cornwall, calling for Newquay airport to be sold.

Commenting, Gilbert said: “We must do all we can to protect front line services while we’re clearing up the financial mess that’s been left by Labour. But it’s important that Cornwall Council doesn’t make rash decisions over the future of Newquay airport. The airport plays a vital role in our economy and we must ensure it’s on a sound and sustainable footing before we consider disposal. When it is sold, we must get the best possible price for it.

“My concern is that, at the moment, we wouldn’t get the best price and we could damage Cornwall’s chances of economic growth by undermining the viability of the airport.”
