Proposers of and objectors to the development of Penzance Harbour have met to agree the scope for examining alternatives to the Route Partnership’s scheme to extend the harbour to the south over the beach towards Battery Rocks.
The proposed development forms part of the Isles of Scilly Ferry link project. Representatives of the Route Partnership (Isles of Scilly Link) have secured £28k of funding to examine alternative options for the harbour arrangements in Penzance – which will improve passenger and freight handling for the Isles of Scilly Link.
The Friends of Penzance Harbour welcome the exploration of alternatives and have agreed to provide their support and advice during the next few weeks whilst investigations and scoping work is carried out.
Local MP Andrew George, who chaired the meeting, said: “This is a positive step forward. Both the Route Partnership and the Friends of Penzance Harbour have agreed to work together in support of a substantial but rapid first examination of the alternatives.
“In the meantime, the current planning application for the development of the harbour to the south is currently going through routine planning procedure for determination in a couple of months time. Equally, the Friends of Penzance Harbour will continue to vigorously oppose these plans.
“I must congratulate all for their contributions to this constructive dialogue. This is important progress.”
