The owner of an outdoor equipment shop and well-known Truro family business is getting ready to hang up his walking boots and retire after 35 years of trading.

Glyn Jones, managing director of Penrose Outdoors, is in the process of selling the landmark Truro retail business on Town Quay.

For three and a half decades, Jones and his team have become well known for their expert knowledge, customer service and sales of everything you need to enjoy the great outdoors, from tents to ski equipment.

The store will be taken over by national brand Regatta, while the Scorrier-based caravan and touring sales business, Penrose Touring, is also up for sale – currently managed by Jones’ son in law, Martin Snell.

Jones’ son, Chris, is also part of the business, and will continue to run an e-commerce website and outlet, focussing on the ski and tent side of the business.

Glyn Jones said: “Being outdoors is people’s passion and it’s their hobby. One of the things I’ve always tried to do is sell the right product to customer for 10p rather than the wrong product for £100.

“We’ve always tried to be accessible to the ‘non expert’ and welcome people just coming in for a browse. The best part of this job is finding the right product for the right people.”

Manchester-based company, the Regatta Group, hopes to retain as many of the existing staff as possible. The new store, which in the immediate future will continue to trade as Penrose Outdoors, will stock all of the group’s brands: Regatta, Craghoppers and Dare2b as well as other complementary outdoor brands.

Penrose Outdoors is getting ready to hand over the business with a ‘closing down’ sale of all current stock, which began on Monday (August 1).
