Local MP and chairman of the Grocery Market Action Group, Andrew George, is welcoming an announcement from the Business Secretary, Vince Cable, that the Government will press ahead with the establishment of a new supermarket watchdog.

George, who gave evidence to the Competition Commission as part of its 2006-2008 inquiry into the activities of supermarkets, has been campaigning, along with many other organisations for the fair treatment of supermarket suppliers.

George said: “This is very good news. Over the years, supermarkets have become so powerful that they have been able to entirely dictate market conditions and to engage in unacceptable abuse of that power.

“This will affect ten supermarket chains. If they have nothing to hide then they will have nothing to fear.”
