Tesco has announced plans to bring 180 new jobs to St Austell, through an extension of its store on Daniels Lane.

Since the current Tesco store on Daniels Lane opened in 1997 it has proven to be extremely popular with local shoppers. However, the store is no longer large enough to meet the current or future demands of customers or visitors to the area.

Tesco’s plans to extend their current store will allow the service offered to customers to be greatly enhanced. Benefits of the proposals include; a wider range of products and local produce, improved product availability, the reduction of queues at tills, more car parking spaces and improvements to allow easier access to the store and along Daniels Lane. The plans also include a range of environmental features which will reduce the stores’ carbon emissions by 40%.

Announcing the plans, Tesco corporate affairs manager, Juliette Bishop, said: “Our proposals will make a major contribution towards improving choice, competition and the range of goods and services available to consumers in St Austell. We feel that our plans will deliver an improved store appropriate for St Austell as Cornwall’s largest town, which will support the existing town centre regeneration plans and making St Austell a key shopping destination.

Tesco’s plans will create a further 180 new jobs, in addition to the 286 staff currently employed at the Tesco store.

Tesco will be holding two exhibitions where the proposals to extend the Tesco store will be available for the local community to view and comment on.
