Growth Hub is encouraging people to boost the biodiversity of their business at an event in Woodland Valley Farm, Truro, this week.
The Innovation Exchange, Boosting Biodiversity, this Thursday (NOV 14), will see guest speaker Matthew Elmes, director of Pollenize and The Far Out Thinking Company, explaining how he helps biodiversity with his business and how others can too.
There has been a 41% decline in UK species since 1970 and 15% are threatened with extinction. With 79% of Cornwall’s land not actively managed for environmental growth, businesses can play a huge part in reversing this trend and contributing to Cornwall’s Nature Recovery strategy.
Far Out Thinking is an Environmental Intelligence Research, Development and Innovation company. It has been working with the University of Plymouth to develop Floradex, a pioneering biodiversity tracking tool.
The tool has been designed to provide businesses, as well as landowners and developers, with knowledge of how to create the best healthy habitats for pollinators. Floradex uses data to recommend seeds to plant to help create an on-site ecosystems – boosting the biodiversity around businesses.
A director from Pollenize, says: “The way the tool works is we will geofence the piece of land, that means just creating a boundary around where we propose to do a survey of a business’ natural space. We’ll push all of that data we’ve collected and put it through the biodiversity tracking tool – Floradex. Then that data will tell you what’s there already what you could plant more of to improve the biodiversity on site.”
The lunchtime event, powered by Growth Hub will discuss how the University supported the development of the new tool and how your business can get involved.
