St Day construction firm RM Developments has won the tender to build two new landmark buildings which will see the Krowji creative hub at Redruth double in size.

The local firm faced stiff regional competition to be named builder for the £3.7 million pound project – which is backed both by private sources and the European Regional Development Fund Convergence Programme.

Krowji’s 1907 grammar school buildings already provide workshops and studios, clustered around the Melting Pot Café, for around 100 people working in the arts and creative industries. The new workspace – due to be completed next Spring – will raise capacity to 200.

Since March, CGS Contractors has been at work demolishing the derelict 1970s staff-room, dinner hall and gym to pave the way for the new buildings.

“We’re already getting inquiries about our new space and there’s a real buzz about the project,” said Krowji’s Ross Williams.

“We’ve long known the demand was there for the unique creative work-space and inspirational atmosphere we’re created here over the last decade so it’s very exciting for us to have excellent local contractors in place and to see the work progressing at such a pace.”
