Young & Talented Cornwall, The Lord Lieutenant’s Fund, has awarded more than £19k to fifteen of Cornwall’s rising stars, in the latest round of grants.
A racing kart driver, an Olympic athlete hopeful, an archer, an Irish dancer and a sabre fencer are among the latest recipients of the grant funding which supports Cornwall’s brightest prospects who otherwise lack the means to pursue their dreams fully.
The grant scheme is headed up by Lord Lieutenant Colonel Edward Bolitho OBE who presented some of the budding young stars with an award certificate at Truro High School for Girls, one of the corporate sponsors.
Colonel Bolitho said: “It is always such a pleasure to meet the Young & Talented Cornwall grant recipients, and to hear about their achievements and drive to succeed in their respective fields.
“Schemes like Young & Talented Cornwall do such a good job in helping talented young Cornish people, who might otherwise not have the required financial backing available, progress their skills to realise their potential. The support of generous organisations, such as Truro High School for Girls, is crucial in ensuring we can continue to support rising Cornish talent.”
The five bright young talents at the presentation evening were:
- Amelia Nelson (St Ives), a talented racing kart driver who began racing at age 6, starting competitive racing in 2017. She is currently the South West Champion, and recently achieved first place in the Mansell Kart club Championship in the Junior Rotax Class.
- Daisy Hassell (Newquay) has been selected as one of only two athletes in her age group for the Pentathlon GB Talent Pathway. Awarded £1,071.50 by Young & Talented Cornwall, she is driven to achieve her goals of selection for the Youth Olympics in 2026 and the Olympics in 2028.
- The indoor national champion in the under 14 for Archery, Chloe Scott(Bugle) is part of the National Training and Development Programme for Archery GB. She is ranked 9th in the junior national rankings and 31st for the senior rankings. She is aiming to participate in the 2028 Olympics.
- After starting Irish Dancing in 2017, Ellie Prason (Falmouth) has progressed from a beginner to intermediate level in very short space of time and is preparing for the national championships.
- Melissa Jane (Truro) is a talented Sabre Fencer, a sport which combines power, agility, co-ordination, and muscular endurance as well as great mental strength.
Set up in 2005, Young & Talented Cornwall, The Lord Lieutenant’s Fund, provides grants to Cornwall’s next generation of superstars, helping them to achieve their potential across a wide range of skill areas, from sport and performing arts to music, creative arts and science.
