Local charity The Hypatia Trust has opened a specialist women’s bookshop in Penzance.

The bookshop – Women in Word – has been opened at the charity’s premises on Chapel Street.

The founder of the Hypatia Trust, Melissa Hardie, says she began collecting women’s books “half her lifetime ago” – with a bookshop on Richmond Hill, London, only a few steps away from where Virginia Woolf began the Hogarth Press.

She said: “Women in Word Bookshop is the second coming of a social enterprise for all of us to launch a co-operative bookshop, selling our books and yours too (on commission) as a bright, refreshing approach to women’s growing share of literary history. Welcome! Do come & get inspired.”

Opening times are 11-4 Wed-Fri and 12-3 on Saturdays. The shop will be staffed by members of the Hypatia Trust team, but they are also looking for volunteers to help in the shop, especially on Saturday afternoons. Anyone interested should email miki@hypatia-trust.org.uk.

The Hypatia Trust will be holding events in the new bookshop space, including an upcoming women’s networking event, and a Saturday morning Book Club for children, run by Maggi Livingstone.
