Two businesses from Cornwall were crowned as among the ‘Best in the West’ at the FSB ‘Celebrating Small Business Awards 2018’ held in Taunton this week.

The south west finals of the national FSB contest were held at Somerset County Cricket Ground and were designed to find the best small businesses from across the whole of the region.

Penryn-based Ultramed was named Micro Business Of The Year while Made For Life Organics (Spiezia Organics) scooped the Ethical and Green Business trophy.

The event also saw a Highly Commended award go to Any Old Lights Ltd from Fowey in the Micro Business section.

Alan Sanders from Ultramed, a health technology firm, said they were delighted to win.

“We have a very dedicated team who put a lot into their work and to win this award in what already looks like being a very exciting year for us is fantastic.“

Made for Life’s Amanda Winwood, whose company produce a range of 100% organic skincare, was equally excited to be among the winners.

“It is amazing,” she said. “It was such a shock to hear our name read out as winners and we are absolutely thrilled. Our business has doubled in size in the last year and this news will make things even better for the team.”

All of the local winners will now be reassessed against winners from 11 other UK FSB regions and could then be shortlisted to go through to the UK national FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards 2018 final in London in May.
