Organisers of the second Cornwall Teacher Awards have been “really encouraged” by public and sponsor reaction to the five new categories introduced for next year’s awards.

The awards’ aim is to “create a celebration” to recognise inspirational and outstanding teachers, head teachers, teaching assistants, school support workers, further education lecturers and volunteers who make a difference to children and young people in Cornwall.

The 2017 event will see five new award categories including Pupil Wellbeing Initiative of the Year – and Employer Engagement Initiative of The Year.

Nikki Baron, business development director at EMPRA, the organisation behind the awards said: “Once again we have attracted plenty of interest and submissions have been rolling in – we’re way ahead on numbers compared with last year.”

This year, Cornwall Teacher Awards has chosen a local charity to promote – the Cornwall Community Foundation.

Baron said: “We introduced the award student wellbeing this year because we wanted to highlight the need for more support for children and teenagers suffering with mental health issues.

“One in ten children and young people aged 5 – 16 suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder – that is around three children in an average class of 30 school children.

“On our website, and throughout the event, we are supporting the fabulous work of Jane Hartley, High Sheriff of Cornwall who recently launched a fund within the Cornwall Community Foundation which helps by introducing sport and outdoor activity to young people with mental health issues.”

The awards will be held at Truro Cathedral in April, there are 15 award categories. Sponsors confirmed so far include: University of Exeter, Truro and Penwith College, The Cornwall College Group, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Enterprise Adviser Programme, Holywell Bay Fun Park and national publication, Schools Week.

Baron added: “There are lots of categories available to potential sponsors, so if there are any organisations out there who’d like to help sponsor the event, please get in touch.”

Closing date for entering the awards is December 31.
