Kevin Lavery has been appointed chief executive of Cornwall’s new unitary authority.

Prior to applying for the post, Lavery served as chief executive of Serco Solutions for two years. He has also had stints as director of education and local government at BT, MD of Enterprise PLC and chief executive of e-government company Agilisys.

Cornwall County Council leader David Whalley said: “His experience clearly illustrates he has the right commercial and public sector experience to take on such an important role. During his interview he demonstrated his passion in helping Cornwall transform public services.

“In 1997 Lavery joined Newcastle City Council where he became the youngest chief executive in the country. His experience can help turn our aspirations for Cornwall into reality; putting the residents of Cornwall at the heart of everything we do.”

Lavery will lead an organisation with a budget of over £1 billion and a staff (including schools) of over 22,000 people, making it the largest single employer in Cornwall.
