A Cornish social media marketing agency has achieved ‘Net Zero’ status after taking steps to dramatically reduce carbon emissions as well as offsetting its remaining carbon footprint.

Penryn-based Oh So Social started its Net Zero journey with a conscious team decision to strive to be greener and more sustainable. Actions to reduce emissions included increased recycling, car-sharing, virtual calls instead of travelling to in-person meetings, reducing single-use plastic and going paper free in the office.

Conscious of the impact running a business, of any size, can have on the environment, the Oh So Social team were keen to go further. Their remaining carbon emissions were offset to achieve Net Zero via climate action website Ecologi, through planting 500 trees and prevented 10 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere (as of July 2022.) This is the equivalent of 24,814 miles driven by the average car.

Katherine George, director of Oh So Social, said: “I’ve always cared about the environment and have done as much as I can to protect where we live from a personal standpoint, so becoming Net Zero with Oh So Social was the next logical step. It takes us from being the people who think about all of these things, to having it as a core part of who we are.”

To achieve Net Zero status, Oh So Social worked with Tevi Cornwall, an EU-funded project led by University of Exeter. Chris Phillips, impact & partnership development manager at Tevi, helped the Oh So Social team work towards Net Zero. He said: “We always knew the carbon footprint of Oh So Social was going to be relatively small, as Katherine and the team have done such great work already.

“Working together, we’ve been able to isolate exactly where their main emissions are coming from and reduce them accordingly where we can. The team have chosen to then offset any remaining ‘hard to reduce’ emissions leaving the business in a great position going forward.”
