Cornwall Chamber of Commerce has welcomed yesterday’s (July 8) summer statement from the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Rishi Sunak announced a raft of crowd-pleasing measures in his announcement, in an attempt to save jobs and kickstart the economy in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Chamber chief executive, Kim Conchie, said: “Our initial reaction at Cornwall Chamber of Commerce is very surprised, delighted and pleased with the measures that the Chancellor has announced. I’m very impressed with the creativity he’s taken to creating jobs in sectors which I think will benefit Cornwall.

“We are very pleased with the big cut in VAT that he’s taken 15% reduction from 20% to 5% on all hospitality and tourism offerings between next Wednesday and January 12th 2020, this will be a real boost for retention of jobs in the hospitality sector and will enable us to have a proper ‘v-shaped’ recovery in those sectors.”

“I think today was about jobs business and the economy going forward, and our initial reaction is to hugely support that and we welcome all the initiatives which the Chancellor said himself have never been tried before in this country, we look forward to supporting them in the coming months.”
