Resilience, risk and reputation are three themes that will be closely examined at a conference dedicated to charities, social enterprises and third sector organisations.

Thrive Third Sector, taking place on March 17 at the Pavilion Centre, Wadebridge will welcome keynote speaker William Shawcross, who is chairman of the Charity Commission and former board member of the International Crisis Group.

The event is being organised by the Chartered Institute of PR South West, communcations agency MPAD and Mackerel Sky Events, with the Institute of Fundraising South West.

Shawcross has a wealth of experience in the charity sector, with a distinctive focus on human rights and international aid, writing on the work of aid agencies and international organisations in his books ‘The Quality of Mercy – Cambodia, genocide and Modern Conscience’ and ‘Deliver Us From Evil – Warlords and Peacekeepers in a World of Endless Conflict’.

Chief executive of Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust, Paula Martin, will host the conference.

She said: “William Shawcross has made some strong statements recently about how the charity sector is not immune from scrutiny, so we are delighted he will be coming to Cornwall as our keynote.

“Some large charities have been under fire this past year for aggressive fundraising tactics, questionable governance and now charities of all sizes could be impacted by unintended consequences from changes to fundraising guidelines.

“I am proud to be part of the event, where we hope to firmly examine and debate these issues and the future of our charity sector.”

Tickets are priced at £36 for early bird and CIPR and IoF members, £45 for non-members and are available to buy at thriveevents.org.uk.
