Environment Week
Truro and Penwith College continues to be at the forefront of sustainable education, offering opportunities for staff, students, and the public to develop crucial skills in high-demand areas focused on sustainability.
As one of the first providers of Carbon Literacy Training in the region, the college offers courses that provide essential insights into the cost of carbon and its impact on everyday life. These courses equip individuals, communities, and organisations with the motivation and knowledge needed to reduce emissions. In 2024, the college’s senior management team set an example by being the first to take part in a specialised leadership version of the training.
Students at Truro and Penwith College are also actively engaging with climate issues. A recent student survey highlighted the importance of system-based changes, with a focus on supporting changes in environmental law and transitioning to a sustainable economy.
Through the SPF-funded Future is Green Project, the college is developing a range of innovative technology courses. Electric and hybrid vehicle courses are already in place, ranging from a Level 3 award in system repair and replacement to a Level 4 award in diagnosis and testing So far, 54 learners have benefited from these courses, with a new course on managing the hazards associated with electric vehicles receiving positive feedback from first responder services.
The college is also playing a key role in shaping the future of sustainable construction. The Sustainable Construction Advisory Panel (SCAP), established and led by Truro and Penwith College, meets quarterly to discuss strategies such as the Housing Decarbonisation Strategy for Cornwall and the circular economy. Industry leaders from construction, social housing, renewables, and education collaborate on this panel to tackle the climate crisis.
