It’s back to school for children across the county which means employing anyone under 18 comes with special rules.
The Growth Hub has been supporting Cornwall Council’s Business Regulatory Support (BRS) with a series of summer webinars – with one focusing on strict guidelines on how many hours children can work and the types of activity they can do.
Now term time has arrived their education is a priority, so working for pocket money takes a back seat. No jobs during school hours is obvious but the other restrictions might surprise you.
Did you know?
- Children can only work 12 hours a week
- Can’t work before 7am or after 7pm.
- No more than 2 hours on a school day and a Sunday
Cornwall Council’s Juvenile Employment Officer, Tom Thorp, explained Child Employment laws are there to protect children’s health, safety and educational prospects as well as protecting employers.
He said: “All businesses who employ people under 18 must apply for a work permit, It is a simple process and we can guide you through what you can legally do.”
