Leila Da Silva, Nursing Associate, Carn To Coast Health Centres

With the support of the University Centre Truro & Penwith and its Nursing Associate Apprenticeship, Carn To Coast Health Centres has been able to support Leila to gain the qualification she needs to move from Healthcare Assistant, to her dream career in Nursing.

Gaining her professional Nursing qualifications without leaving Cornwall, living with her family and maintaining her income in her Healthcare Assistant role at Carn to Coast Health Centres, Leila’s career aspirations have grown alongside her skillset.

Leila commented: “The qualification means I have been promoted to Nursing Associate and can take on a lot more responsibility in the surgery including childhood immunisation and cervical smear tests.

“My pay has increased thanks to the promotion and the Surgery is sending me back to College to start my Level 6 Registered Nurse Apprenticeship which will allow me to become a fully qualified Nurse.

“The Apprenticeship has been amazing, I never would have been able to do this before because I have a mortgage and a family. I love my job and the Apprenticeship allowed me to maintain my pay throughout the whole course. The College and tutors have been amazing. The tutors are not just lecturers they are friends and I hope to keep in touch with them forever, they were phenomenal.

“I want to be a Registered Nurse and eventually a Nurse Practitioner, which is one level up again. The long-term goal is to be a partner in the practice.”
